Vegetables & Valentines

As with other letters, the children amazed us this week with their level of connection with what can be a more obscure letter -- V. They came up with many 'V' words that the teachers had not thought of, such as "voice box" and "vest" and "volume." Of course their focus all week was on Friday's Valentine's Day festivities. They spent much of their free art time creating cards for their families and friends.

J demonstrating, "I love you thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much..."

At one station, there were various sizes and styles of paper hearts out, along with glue and other supplies. Someone said that the large and small hearts were "the Mommy one and the baby one," which inspired the creation of "families of hearts." Many of these can be seen on our classroom wall.

On Thursday, we explored different 'V'arieties of 'V'egetables. These included carrots, celery, and cucumber. We began by looking at the whole vegetable. A few children connected the cucumber to the zucchini we explored during Z week because they look so similar outside. For each vegetable, we all had an opportunity to examine the color, texture, shape, and smell.

Then teachers helped cut the vegetables into smaller pieces. Our friends noticed that carrots and celery were each the same color throughout, but that cucumber was a different color inside. There was some debate as to whether the inside color should be considered green (since it was so much lighter than the skin) or yellow. They discussed it and decided it was light green because it was definitely not the same color as the school bus.

We also explored the texture and pattern inside the cucumber. One child discovered that he could see through a thin enough slice of cucumber because it was even lighter in the very center. We discussed the seed pattern and the purpose of seeds in plants.

One child spontaneously used the vegetable pieces to make a face, which was quickly copied by other friends at the table.

Finally, of course, came the tasting! Some liked the taste more than others, but everyone at least tried a nibble, and some even asked for seconds! They also connected the activity to our recent conversations about nutrition when someone noticed that carrots -- one of the veggies they were sampling -- were pictured on the "Vitamin A" placemat on out table.

On Friday, the anticipation was over -- Valentine's Day was finally here! Instead of cards and sweets this year, we decided to do a "book exchange" because books are more lasting and tangible for the children to enjoy. We were so proud of how our kids handled the whole experience! The simple book exchange became an exercise in number recognition, social skills, and patience.

Each child brought a wrapped book to put in the basket. The books got numbered, then each child drew a random number out of a hat. Each child got a turn to match their number to the number on a book, then return to the circle with their book.

Every one of them sat patiently awaiting their turn. The group even decided on their own that they should wait to unwrap the books until everyone had one. Every child managed to hold the wrapped treasure in their lap while all 17 children selected their books by number. They weren't even pulling at the corners to peek!

After unwrapping their books, the children wanted the teachers to read their book aloud to the group. Teacher Rashida randomly selected five numbers and read those books first. (The other books were enjoyed throughout the day.) The selected children were so proud to have their new books read to the class!

And of course, the grand finale was a dance party to their favorite song, "The Hamster Dance!"

Thank you to all the families who went out of your way to be a part of our Valentine's Day celebration. We hope you all have a fun and relaxing long weekend!

Building race tracks, Letter 'R'

Last week Monday morning we added wooden blocks to our building area. The children right away started building race tracks and were also surprised to know that what they were building starts with the letter R. One child said, "race cars go on race tracks; and, both start with the letter R". Bravo! They are getting the letter recognition concepts now!

Working to make a square race track with pit stops!

They made the letter 'M' and said they were going to zoom the race cars down the steep slope...

Racing the cars in the basket...

Making garages/parking lots for race cars...

Later we made our own race cars and numbered them with our favorite number...

Painting cars...

Adding wheels...

Pretending to be the race car drivers...

Friends saw the Valentines day card up on the calendar and counted every day during circle time. We began discussing about love, who we love, why do we love, what do you do for the people you love and many more talks. So we thought to make Valentine collages for our purple room wall and the children also got a chance to express their feelings through this wonderful art!

For the letter R we made letter collages using red party streamers to make roses, stamps of rabbit, rainbow, roses, rhinoceros; and, cut outs of robots, roses, running, and letter R stickers.

'R'ubber bands with Geo Boards was an interest that continued for the entire week and they asked me to open it everyday. Initially they took a while to figure out how to manipulate the rubber bands. But mastery was not far away! Check out some fascinating creations!

We read the book, "Rainbow Fish" and subsequently worked to make our own rainbow fish. Then the book ends with the rainbow fish giving one shiny scale to other fish who had none. So all the fish now look the same with one shiny scale and play well together happily ever after. While they made their fish, they also spoke about which colors they would like to give from their own fish if a friend needed one. Each child also got a chance to mention one thing he/she would do to make a friend happy/smile.

'R'ollers were fun both indoors as well as outdoors.

Indoors we made different stamps on our papers...

Outdoors we used them with water to paint things around (fence, house, baskets)...

We also incorporated some 'r'unning, 'r'iding, 'rocking', and going in 'r'ounds while we were outdoors...
rocking...

riding...

round and round spins the merry go round!

Last week it 'r'ained (as if just for our letter of the week R), and our friends got excited to taste the rain and collect it in buckets...

Though not much rain water was collected, the anticipation of the bucket getting full was super exciting!

Some other fun activities we did were making teams and playing the put the 'r'ing around the 'r'ocket game and making 'r'ainbow 'r'ockets! Whoever scored, made a point for their team. It was great to see them cheer for each other and give tips to each other. The first day was a tie. The next day it was 3 - 6 for team A and team B respectively.

Last but not the least we cooked our 'R'aviolis. We saw and spoke about boiling water that helps us cook/steam many foods.
Here are our chefs popping in the raviolis in the water. They said the water quite made a splashing sound and looked like throwing rocks in a river. :-)

We are eating the ravioli. Some chose to eat it with pasta sauce while some wanted to try them without.

Overall we had a 'R'avishing week!

I will be flying to India this weekend, so I will see you all back on the 3rd of March. Until then, take care. Have a Happy Valentines day!

Warmly,
Rashida.
