Unique Ukeleles

Happy Sunday Purple Room!

I hope you are all enjoying your weekend.

This week is U week. Monday we will talk about what it means to be unique. We are all special and perfect just the way we are. We will be doing a craft based on our uniqueness. Tuesday we will learn about ukeleles and where they originated. We will be making our own ukeleles and making music together. Wednesday we will discuss the United States. We will talk about the history of our country and do a craft to celebrate the U.S. Thursday we will talk about uniforms and different occupations (firefighters, policemen, nurses, construction workers, etc.) Friday we will be doing something a little different. Since the weather is warming up, we wanted to have a water day. We will be talking about underwater creatures and life in the ocean. We will have water tables and water games outside. Please come prepared with the proper clothing.

We will also continue with sharing. Sharing will be Wednesday and Friday. Please have your child pick only one of the two days to share. This will ensure that we can get through everyone. Also, since its U week we encourage that students bring a sharing that either starts with U or has a U in the name.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. See you tomorrow!

Take care,
Shaina

Sharing!

Hello Purple Room Parents,

Today was our first day with shares in a while. After seeing the number of students with shares, I have decided to have Fridays also be a day for shares. So in the future, Wednesdays and Fridays will be sharing days. Again, I ask that your child try and bring something different each time he/ she shares so we dont lose focus during sharing time.I also encourage students to bring a share that begins with the letter of the week. For those students who didn't get a chance to share today and want to do so Friday, parents, please help them choose a share that starts with T.

Secondly, today was Milos's 4th birthday and all of Purple Room is invited to his birthday party this Saturday (4/27) at 2pm. If you did not receive the evite and would like to come please email Preeya at preeyacat@gmail.com for details.

Lastly, since the weather is warming up, we ask that students bring reusable water bottles everyday (if they don't already do so) that we can take with us outside. This will make water breaks much easier.

This is a popular type that some of our students have. These are a good option, although there are many different kinds sold. Please look into purchasing one if your child does not already have one.

Thank you! I hope you all have a great rest of your Wednesday!

Take care,
Shaina

Transportation, Twins, & Triplets

Happy Sunday Purple Room Parents!

First off, I am happy to say that classroom behavior has improved significantly so we will be introducing sharing this week. However, shares will no longer be every day. We will have a designated share day which will be Wednesday of each week. I ask that you continue to keep shares and toys home on all other days of the week. We will try our best to get through all of the shares on Wednesdays. I encourage students to bring a different share each week. This will help keep the other students interested during sharing time.

Secondly, our letter of the week is T. Throughout the week, we will be discussing forms of transportation (I.e. walking, biking, trains, cars, boats, planes, horses, hot air balloon, etc.) as well as doing crafts and games around the topic. A suggestion was made to have twin day, so WEDNESDAY will be twin day. Please get in touch with other parents from Purple Room and try and coordinate for twin day. (Triplets are okay too!)

Lastly, since the weather has been warming up, I hope to have a picnic this week. Nothing different other that eating lunch outside. Also, our class has been taking care of caterpillars. Last week they cocooned and this week we are hoping to see them turn into butterflies. FUN!

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend. See you tomorrow!

Warm Regards,
Shaina

Spectacular Letter S

Hello Purple Room Parents,

I hope you all are enjoying your Saturday afternoon.

For those children who have not yet received their recipe books, I will be working on them during the next few days and hope to get the rest sent home by the beginning of next week.

Next week is S week. Seeing that they are many things that start with S, the week is open ended for children’s recommendations. I had a few students request that we talk about snails (seeing that they are invading our yard during play time!). So we will be doing a craft around snails as well as discussing the benefits of snails. I hope to encourage that snails are not to be squished and hit with our playground toys. We want to treat our animal friends as nicely as our human friends. Another student also had an interest in snakes. We will discuss many different kinds of snakes and will do a craft based on snakes. I would also like to talk about our solar system. We will talk about the planets that make up our solar system as well as stars and the different constellations found in our solar system.

Another important lesson that you may or may not be familiar with is sight words. Sight words are words that appear frequently in most of the text kids read, but can't easily be sounded out. Learning them helps children become more confident readers. The list below contains the most common kindergarten sight words. Although kids won't need to be able to read these sight words until the end of kindergarten, if you've got a pre-K child itching to get started with sight words, this is a great place to start before kindergarten rolls around. For those children who aren't interested yet, that's fine, no pressure.

Please keep this list handy. I encourage that you work with your child if they are interested and help them become familiar with these words. An easy way is through flashcards. It is important that the lessons we do at school be reinforced at home. This will help concepts “stick” with your child.

As I mentioned earlier, next week is still open for child recommendations for topics around the letter S. We will discuss the topics I’ve listed above, but there’s always room for more activities!

Looking forward to next week! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Take care,
Shaina

Photos from P & Q!

We have had loads of fun over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, I will only be able to touch on a thing or two from each week. I hope your child enjoyed our activities as much as i did!

We had a blast during P week with Pajama Day, Pirate Day and Participation Day. On Pirate Day we made a treasure map and played a game of X Marks the Spot. We also had a treasure hunt in class, ate Pirate Booty and made eye patches! Here are a few pictures from Pirate Day.

For Q week we made a class quilt in which every child decorated their own cloth piece to go on our quilt. The quilt is still being made. I hope to have it finished in the next few weeks. How fun would it be to have a picnic on a quilt made by our very own students? We also made quesadillas, which were a huge hit! Here are a few pictures of Q week.

Recipes!

Good afternoon Purple Room parents,

Next week is R week. We have a lot of fun things planned. We are going to start the week off with Radical Red Day on Monday. We encourage students to find everything and anything red to wear to school on Monday. We will be taking pictures of our red attire for our blog. Aside from this, we will make rectangle robots, rockets, rain sticks, discuss rainbows, classify rocks by shape, size and weight, make Rice Krispy treats, discuss recipes and make our own recipe books.

Our recipe book will require parent participation. I ask that each child bring a recipe to school by Wednesday April 10th. It can be a family recipe or simply a recipe found online, cook book, etc. I will take all of the recipes and put them together to make a book in which the students will decorate and take home. Each student will have a book of recipes provided by everyone in the class. My hope is that this book will be an easy reference for recipes that you and your child can do together in the future.

Alongside our recipe book we will be making a recipe for a good student. This will be done as a class and will include all the ingredients needed to make a good student. ( i.e. good listener, helpful, involved in class activities, etc.) Please discuss this idea with your child and help them come up with some ingredients to make a good student. We will brainstorm as a class and bring all of our ideas together to make a complete recipe.

On a separate note, classroom behavior has improved this week. We are not quite ready for shares, however. So, please keep shares at home. When they are brought to school they are too much of a distraction for students. If classroom behavior continues to improve, we will incorporate shares again. I am considering having designated days for sharing. When we get to that point I will let you know what days of the week we will have shares.

If you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to email me.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Take care,
Shaina
