Human body, letter K

Hello Purple Room Families,

We had tremendous fun together exploring sounds the entire week. Monday a friend brought a book about different body parts such as ears, throat, lungs, etc. and how they can get sick. Children were amazed to see how the lungs or ears look from inside and started asking many questions. We got a big board book from the Creative Minds library and they were even more amazed to see the inside (organs and bones) of the body. A friend asked me where the bones are. I said that they are inside our bodies. Another friend asked what other things we have inside and then the entire conversation and exploration started. M said that he knew we had a heart and brain inside, while D added that we have a food pipe inside. They also remembered about the recent fracture L had in his elbow and started asking about bone fractures.Their inquisitiveness was definitely firing up our conversations!

The first body part they wanted to learn all about was the eye!

We discussed the eye anatomy and later friends made their own eyeballs. We clicked close up pictures of their eyes so that they can see the colors in the eye while some friends chose to look at their eyes in a mirror and guess the colors!

L gives a close up of her eye and....

...uses the colors she found in her eyeball to make her fake eyeball. She was confident to use brown on the upper half and blue on the lower half since that was how her eyeball looked in real life. What a perfect choice of colors and what a great representation of how her eyes look!

She had fun making her eyeball into a puppet by placing her hand inside the CD sleeve :)

S chose her favorite colors to make her eyeball and added her upper and lower eyelashes...

S working with his greenish eye...

D also added tiny red blood vessels that she saw in her eye...

Letter K....

We made letter K collages with kiwis and kites. It was great to see their individual choices using these cutouts.

While K used only kiwis....

S used only kites, and ....

L made a pattern with both - kiwi kite kiwi kite :)

We also did tape art where friends taped the letter K and colored around it. Later they peeled the tapes off and could see the letter print left behind!

K was proud to do the K art since her name started with a K :)

They were super interested in kites so that week we made our own kites

S decorating the frame...

E adding the fun colors to his kite's tail...

L ready to fly it...

Kite fun!

During the week we also made kabobs with fruits!

D's patterned kabob!

S building his kabob!

A's fruit kebab with a special topping!

Out of all the fruits peels left behind, friends created a fruit body!

L volunteered to do her body outline and with friends' help, we got her traced down :)

Friends started to add little elements - funky hair, smiley mouth, and those grapes stems were their interpretation of fibers in the lungs! Neat, huh?

More body parts growing with eyes, tongue, and using strawberries for heart!

The amazing face with eyebrows, eyes, nose, upper and lower lip, tongue, teeth, freckles on cheeks, and in the end they added two grapes for nostrils!

Here seeing the pineapple slice, L said that it looked like a sun and went ahead to do a little nature background for the body by adding kiwi peels as rays!

The tremendous hand with both nails and fingers!

Tada! Our beautiful and imaginative creation!

Hahahahaha...Have you ever thought of a cucumber peel mustache? ;) I always proudly say that being silly runs in our blood!

Other activities...

Daffodil drawing...

Tracing with shapes...

Musical instruments vocabulary where we learned about different instruments and their types...

We culminated our learning of instruments with a parade...

Clear glue and liquid starch Gak. This was sticky, icky, gooey, like a big blob of bubble gum. We stuck a few materials in there and tried later to separate the materials from the sticky pond :)

Seeing Gak flow. It made a transparent opening with a thin Gak layer and a friend on the other side of the table could be easily seen!

The game of pulling out materials began...

L using stretching as his tool...

L used squeezing to get the ball out...

A stretching too...

It was really frustrating in the beginning since the Gak was super sticky and didn't allow for us to get rid of it :) But soon our friends found out ways and felt so competent to get the treasures out and collect them!

We will continue learning about our amazing bodies for a few more weeks, nailing down different parts as per the vote of our friends. We have bones, blood, and heart next on our list. Please wait for more to come!

Hugs,
Teacher Rashida
