Mails and "Pumpkins!"

This week we continued to make our 'P'ersonal mail boxes, and this has encouraged friends to write to each other. The anticipation of receiving a 'mail' had been a big topic of the week. We read books like, 'Millie Waits for the Mail', 'Mail in Husher Town', etc. to talk about how we feel when we see our flags up.

We practiced our letter "P" on the light table, using numbers as a guide. (The circles are numbered in order in the way "P" is written). We also worked to make our letter "P" collages using materials that begin with the letter "P" (pom poms, pasta, pink, purple, letter p stamps).

Wednesday's pumpkin patch field trip was the most talked about. Beginning from Monday, the countdown was on! After Wednesday, they all spoke about what they liked the most: hayride, then train ride, the golden pumpkins (wow, they remembered those!), then the maze, and yes some liked the video, especially the Black Crow.

We found this nice party tent at the pumpkin patch, and explored it to the fullest ;-)

This week we read books on pumpkins like, "I Like Pumpkins", and did two dramas in class - one was on the song "Five little Pumpkins" sitting on the gate. We instead did 10 little pumpkins and made up a rhyming song for the last five. The children acted out the entire drama and said the dialogue as well. It was wonderful to see that side of their talent shine out! Later they worked to create an illustration of their own with construction paper. The other was about the book, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves," where I got the props and we used them to act out our story.

Cutting the giant pumpkin, feeling it with all our senses and taking out the seeds was super fun. They dug and dug and dug to get out all the seeds. Some described the inside of the pumpkin as webby and so cold. We later drew and carved on it as well, and waited for next day to bake the seeds and have a 'P'icnic outside.

We also guessed how many seeds are there and counted by 10...none of our guesses were right, but we had great estimations.

We ended our week by letting our Green Bush Cricket go back to its habitat, and waited and watched it fly away. We were proud to take good care of him!

Have a great weekend!

Happy birthday to Kianna from all our Purple room friends!
We have all your cards ready to present you on Monday!

Warmly,
Rashida.
