Gardening, letter X, and Apex Gymnastics field trip

While we were talking about some important days during the month of April, the discussion on Earth Day (22nd of April) came up and we spoke about the different ways we can protect our environment. The idea of trees and planting came up. It was a great moment where we could read about something green. I read a story called "How a Seed Grows", and later looking at their excitement and involvement in the book, we planned to plant our own little seed.

Filling soil...

Digging the yellow peas with our pointing finger. The children wanted to refer to the book before doing the next steps...they are learning to use available resources :)

Adding water. After that, they took the responsibility to put it near sunlight, care for it and see it grow at home and later plant it in their backyards!

We also filled the empty barrel next to the fence with loads of fresh soil and water getting it prepared to sow more seeds next week...we plan to work on some herb planting like basil and parsley. We already have rosemary in some of the barrels that we smelled and friends said, "Ahhhh" (inhaling the smell).

Their interest in building was very noticeable this week too...

Building complex structures with wooden blocks...

Making a motorcycle...

Building with Legos...

Building structures and scenes with foam blocks...

Building towers with pattern blocks...

Making letter 'X'

Also for letter X, we made X collages and looked at x-rays. Matching x-rays was one of their favorite activities.

X collages...

L finding x-ray matches...

W keenly observing and making necessary changes to fix his matches...

Now D wanted to match many at a time and she along with L designed a strategy to work on the big collection. D and L spread all the x-rays on the light table first to get the best view and later tried to match the pictures with a little more help from S!

Other activities we did during the week were...

Doing sensory with shaving cream. They drew pictures and wrote letters and some just swam in the cream :-)

Working with interlocking wooden shapes...It was totally open-ended and their creativity knew no bounds!

J making a family of snowmen...

C making a patterned flower...

D making a very intricate design...

Painting by rolling spikey balls...

B feeling the spikes on the ball...

A coating the pokey ball with multi colors...

J swooshing the tray to roll all the balls...

S showing her excitement of making a colorful pokey ball from a dull brown one!

On Monday, friends were super excited for going to Apex Gymnastics where they experienced a professional setting.

Introducing themselves to Teacher Tatyana's helpers...

Parachute play with flying balls...Gross motor!

Stretching....

Seal position...

Lock position...

Choo choo train heading to the trampoline!

Pencil jumps on trampoline...

Hopscotch...

Bouncing...

High jumps on trampoline...

Balancing with arms wide open...

Teacher Tatyana's gym had a wonderful setup and environment that encouraged our children to get their gymnasts out and everybody put in their best. Thumbs up to them, and thanks to all our parent volunteers!

Hugs,
Rashida
